Why do lithium-ion batteries catch fire?
The failure mode has a name: thermal runaway.

That generates heat, which causes more breakdown, which generates more heat. Once it starts it is self-sustaining and cannot be interrupted by switching anything off.

How to spot a counterfeit cell

Signs to be wary of:
- Discharge or capacity ratings that beat anything the major manufacturers publish. If a listed 18650 claims far more than the best cells on the market, that number was invented.
- A brand you cannot find outside vape listings.
- Loose, bubbled or slightly misaligned wrapping.
- A price far below every other seller.
Buy from a shop that will tell you which manufacturer made the cell inside the wrap. The ones that know the answer usually give it without hesitating.
Warning signs a battery is done
Stop using the device and stop charging it if you notice any of these:
- The cell or the device body gets uncomfortably hot in normal use.
- The battery has visibly swollen, or the device casing has started to bulge.
- Run time has collapsed compared to a few months ago.
- There is a chemical or sweet solvent smell around the battery compartment.
- The device only charges intermittently, or the port has become loose.
None of these fix themselves. A cell that is degrading only ever degrades further.
