Why your gums can be in trouble while your teeth look fine
Two things happen at the gum line.
Irritation. Aerosol is warm and chemically active, and gum tissue reacts to it. Redness, tenderness and recession are common complaints among heavy users.
Reduced blood flow. Nicotine is a vasoconstrictor: it narrows blood vessels, including the small ones supplying your gums. What helps while you are still vaping
None of these fix the cause, and all of them reduce the damage in the meantime.
- Drink water constantly, and sip rather than gulp. You are trying to keep tissue moist all day, not rehydrate once.
- Rinse with plain water after a heavy session, to clear the sugary film before it settles in.
- Do not brush immediately after acidic drinks. Wait about half an hour, or you are scrubbing softened enamel.
- Use a fluoride toothpaste and skip the post-brush rinse, so the fluoride actually stays in contact with the teeth.
- Tell your dentist you vape. Not for a lecture, for the right check. Gum pocket measurements matter more than a visual inspection when nicotine is masking the bleeding.
- Choose less sweet liquids. Unsweetened tobacco or unflavoured liquid removes a genuine part of the mechanism, and it tends to reduce how often you reach for the device as well.
What recovers after you stop
Saliva production normalises within days. Dry mouth, and the bad breath that comes with it, generally resolve in the first week or two.
Gum tissue responds within weeks once the blood supply is no longer being constricted.
