IQOS ILUMA vs IQOS: What Actually Changes
Induction heating versus the old blade: what genuinely improves, what stays exactly the same, and what the upgrade cycle quietly costs you every year.
Quick answer
ILUMA replaces the heating blade with induction: a metal strip sealed inside each TEREA stick heats the tobacco from within, so there is no blade to clean or snap. Sticks are not cross-compatible with older models. Nicotine delivery, dependence and yearly spending are unchanged, and the manufacturer makes no claim that ILUMA is safer than earlier IQOS devices.
The difference is the heating method, and only the heating method. Older IQOS models push a thin blade into the tobacco stick and heat it from the middle. ILUMA has no blade: a metal strip sealed inside each TEREA stick heats the tobacco by induction, from the inside out.
Everything that decides your health, your dependence and your yearly spending stays where it was. That is the honest one-paragraph version, and it is worth reading before you pay for an upgrade.
What is the actual difference between IQOS and IQOS ILUMA?
The pre-ILUMA devices heat a HEETS stick with a ceramic-coated blade that slides into the tobacco plug. The blade reaches roughly 300 to 350°C, far below the 600 to 900°C of a burning cigarette tip, so the tobacco releases a nicotine-carrying aerosol without sustained combustion.
ILUMA, which the manufacturer launched in Japan in 2021 and rolled out to other markets afterwards, removes the blade entirely. Each TEREA stick contains a small metal susceptor. The device generates an electromagnetic field, the metal heats, and the tobacco around it warms from within.
Three practical consequences follow:
- No blade to break. A chipped or snapped blade was the single most common failure on the older holders, usually from twisting a stick on removal.
- No blade to scrub. Because nothing enters the tobacco, the dark residue that used to coat the blade does not form in the same place.
- No burnt aftertaste from build-up. Users of blade devices often described the flavour deteriorating as residue accumulated between cleanings.
Those are real engineering improvements. Notice what kind of improvements they are: convenience, reliability, taste. None of them are health improvements, and the company does not present them as such.
Can you use HEETS in an ILUMA?
No, and not for arbitrary commercial reasons. HEETS have no metal susceptor, so an induction device has nothing to heat and the stick simply sits there cold. In the other direction, TEREA is constructed so a heating blade cannot be pushed into it, which is why the packaging warns against trying.
If you keep both generations, you are running two supply chains. In practice most people upgrade, absorb the price of the new device, and then find that the stick they had settled on is now the other kind.
Is ILUMA safer than the older IQOS?
The manufacturer has not claimed it is, and that absence is the most useful fact here.
In 2020 the US Food and Drug Administration granted IQOS a modified risk order permitting a reduced-exposure claim, that the system delivers lower levels of certain harmful chemicals than cigarettes, and explicitly refused a reduced-risk claim because the evidence did not support one. Changing from blade heating to induction does not touch that finding.
The World Health Organization treats all heated tobacco products as tobacco products under the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, with no distinction by heating method. TEREA contains real tobacco. Tobacco held at around 300°C releases nicotine and a range of thermal breakdown products regardless of what supplied the heat.
| Blade IQOS (HEETS) | IQOS ILUMA (TEREA) | |
|---|---|---|
| How the tobacco heats | Ceramic blade inserted into the stick | Induction heating of a metal strip inside the stick |
| Cleaning | Regular blade cleaning needed | No blade; chamber still collects residue |
| Typical failure point | Chipped or broken blade | Battery ageing, as with any lithium-ion device |
| Stick compatibility | HEETS only | TEREA only |
| Contains tobacco | Yes | Yes |
| Nicotine delivery | In the same broad range as a cigarette in published studies | Same |
| Manufacturer health claim | Reduced exposure versus cigarettes | Reduced exposure versus cigarettes; nothing additional versus blade models |
Read the bottom four rows twice. The top of the table is where the upgrade lives. The bottom is where your next ten years get decided.
What the upgrade cycle actually costs
Run the arithmetic device-neutrally. A pack of sticks a day is 365 packs a year. Against that, the device itself is the smallest line in your budget, which is exactly why it is easy to keep buying.
But the device is not a one-time purchase either. Lithium-ion cells lose capacity with every charge cycle, warranties typically run a year with an extension available on registration in many markets, and a new generation arrives often enough that “my old one was getting slow” always feels timely. Over five years, most heavy users buy several devices, plus holders, plus replacement caps.
The sticks still dwarf all of it. That is the number worth staring at, because it is the one that repeats every single morning.
The question a new device is very good at postponing
Here is the pattern almost nobody notices from inside it. A new generation gives you a genuine sense of momentum. Better taste, fewer failures, a slightly different ritual. It feels like something changed.
Your intake did not change. Often it rises slightly, because a device that is pleasant to use gets used more.
Meanwhile the clock that matters keeps running, and it runs both ways. Nicotine largely clears the body in around 72 hours. Heart rate and blood pressure begin to settle within a day of stopping, circulation improves over the following weeks, and the lungs’ cilia start clearing themselves over months (CDC). None of that starts while you are choosing between heating systems.
Most people who eventually stop for good did not manage it on the first attempt. Several tries is the norm, not evidence that you are bad at this. What usually separates the attempt that sticks is not willpower, it is having a real number instead of a rough impression.
So take the two-minute version today. Log every stick you use, and change nothing else. No reduction, no rules, just a count. In three days you will have a baseline, and a baseline is the only thing a taper can be built from.
Puff Counter was made for that step: it logs each stick as you use it and sets the next week’s ceiling from your own average, so the drop stays small enough to actually hold.
A better device is a reasonable thing to want. It is just not the same as being done with this, and only one of those is still available to you.
Frequently asked questions
Is IQOS ILUMA healthier than the older IQOS?
The manufacturer has never claimed it is, and no regulator has authorised such a claim. Induction heating changes how the tobacco gets hot, not what the tobacco is. Both generations heat real tobacco to release nicotine, and the reduced-exposure position the US FDA authorised in 2020 was about cigarettes as the comparison, not about one IQOS model versus another.
Why can't I use HEETS in an ILUMA device?
HEETS contain no metal susceptor, so an induction device has nothing to heat and the stick stays cold. TEREA sticks are built so a heating blade cannot be inserted into them. The two systems are deliberately closed to each other, which means an upgrade also switches which sticks you can buy.
Does ILUMA still need cleaning?
Less, but not never. Because nothing is inserted into the tobacco, the brown residue that coated the old blade does not build up the same way. The heating chamber and the holder still collect condensed aerosol over time, and the manufacturer still supplies cleaning instructions for the device.
Is upgrading to ILUMA worth the money?
As a device it is more reliable, mainly because the blade was the most common point of failure. As a health decision it changes nothing measurable. If the goal is spending less on nicotine, the device is the smallest line in the arithmetic: the sticks are the recurring cost, every single day.
