Quick answer

Quit Vaping has the biggest rating record among the seven alternatives (4.9 from 11,637 US ratings) and is the most vape-specific. Puff Counter, our own app (disclosed below), ranks fifth among the puff-counting group and tapers from a weekly plan instead of Puff Count's daily limit. If you'd rather count vape-free days, Escape the Vape or Exhale do that instead.

Looking for Puff Count alternatives? Quit Vaping has the biggest rating record among the seven apps compared here (4.9 from 11,637 US ratings) and is the most vape-specific; if you’d rather count vape-free days instead of puffs, Escape the Vape or Exhale do that instead. Puff Counter, our own app, is also in this list — disclosed in full below, ranked fifth among the five puff-counting alternatives rather than moved to the top.

What Puff Count does

Puff Count: Quit Vaping Now, by Rodger Studio (Apps), targets vapers specifically. Its own listing names the same core job as most of the apps below: Track Puffs, Track Mg Levels, daily, weekly and monthly usage graphs to “visualize your progress over time,” a Daily Puff Limit paired with Mg Strength settings, Quit Buddies so “you don’t have to do this alone,” a Custom Quit Plan whose daily limits “adapt to your habits” toward a chosen quit date, and Goal Tracking. Its listing calls Puff Count “a proven-to-work app” and says it has helped “over 800,000 users” — Puff Count’s own language, not our verification.

What Puff Count Unlimited costs

None of the top results we checked for “puff count alternative” list what Puff Count actually costs, so here it is straight from its own App Store listing (US, 5 October 2026): ten separate in-app purchase entries, all named “Puff Count Unlimited,” listed in this order:

  • Puff Count Unlimited — $9.99
  • Puff Count Unlimited — $3.99
  • Puff Count Unlimited, 30% Off — $6.99
  • Puff Count Unlimited — $7.99
  • Puff Count Unlimited, Annual — $59.99
  • Puff Count Unlimited — $7.99
  • Puff Count Unlimited — $4.99
  • Puff Count Unlimited, Annual — $89.99
  • Puff Count Unlimited — $59.99
  • Puff Count Unlimited — $49.99

That’s a range of $3.99 to $89.99. Two entries are labelled Annual ($59.99 and $89.99) and one is labelled “30% Off” ($6.99); the listing doesn’t show a billing period — weekly, monthly or otherwise — for the other seven.

Puff Count’s last update, iOS minimum, and no Apple Watch app

Puff Count’s listing was last updated 7 August 2026 and needs iOS 16.4 or later. That’s newer than six of the seven alternatives below — VapeFree (14.2), Quit Vaping (15.0), Escape the Vape (15.1), Puff Counter (15.6), Sum Puff (16.0) and Puffless (16.2) all install on older iPhones; only Exhale needs a newer version (17.6).

Puff Count’s listing also names no Apple Watch app. Two of the seven alternatives do: Quit Vaping and Puff Counter, ours.

Puff Count, Puff Counter, or Puff Count:Quit Vaping Tracker?

Three names, four apps, and it’s easy to install the wrong one. Puff Count — full name “Puff Count: Quit Vaping Now” — is the app this page is about, from Rodger Studio (Apps). A separate app called “Puff Count:Quit Vaping Tracker” (note the full-width colon), from a different iOS developer, holds 10 ratings and is not the same listing. Puff Counter is ours — its US App Store name is “Quit Smoking & Vaping Counter,” not “Puff Count” at all. And on Google Play, “Puff Counter - Stop Vaping” is a different developer’s Android app; it isn’t related to either Puff Count or our Puff Counter.

Everything in the table below and the rest of this page is App Store data as of 5 October 2026 (US storefront): ratings, counts, developers, update dates, languages and paid tiers all come from each app’s own listing.

How we picked

We grouped the seven alternatives the way searchers actually choose between them: five apps that, like Puff Count, have you log individual puffs, and two that count vape-free days instead and leave the puff-level detail out entirely. Within each group the order follows US rating count. Puff Counter is ours, and it sits fifth — where its rating count puts it, not moved up.

Ratings are a rough signal, not proof an app works: a few hundred ratings and a few thousand aren’t the same evidence, and Puff Counter’s own figure, 5.0 from 3 ratings, is too small to mean much alone. Weigh the rating alongside the feature list, not instead of it.

Five apps that keep counting puffs

1. Quit Vaping — vape-specific tracking with a Buddy System

Quit Vaping, by Jonathan Kopp, is built for vaping specifically. Its listing names a Vape Tracker, a Pod/eJuice Tracker and a Puff Tracker alongside Craving and Trigger trackers, guided breathing and meditation, a Money Calculator, Timeline Achievements and a Personal Journal. The Buddy System — “the first ever,” per its listing — pairs you with a friend to quit together and track each other’s progress, close to Puff Count’s own Quit Buddies idea. An Apple Watch app, which Puff Count doesn’t list, rounds it out.

Best for: the biggest rating record of the seven alternatives (4.9 from 11,637 US ratings) and the most vape-specific feature list. Worth knowing: it’s English-only, against Puff Count’s 4 languages, and its Quit Coach sits behind a subscription.

2. Sum Puff — automatic tracking, even phone locked

Sum Puff, by Kaml Abdel-Kader, leads with a claim none of the others make: “Automatic tracking — every puff counted, phone locked or not,” per its own listing. Daily insights cover patterns, peak times and nicotine intake, a quit plan runs from your set date “to zero,” and it compares today against yesterday and this week against last. Its listing says “500K+ vapers already tracking.”

Best for: automatic logging, if its listing’s claim holds up on your device. Worth knowing: some features need a subscription that its listing doesn’t name, it’s English-only, and there’s no Apple Watch app.

3. VapeFree: Quit Gently! — a slower method, plus a virtual pet

VapeFree, by TerraTechna, tracks puffs and nicotine alongside a custom quitting plan, daily puff limits and progress visuals — the same ground Puff Count covers. What’s different is the framing: its listing offers “a gentle method” to “get smoke-free slowly, at your own pace” instead of going cold turkey, plus a virtual pet you heal through your own quitting progress and a cravings tab with community support and interactive fidgets. Its listing says it has “100K+ users.”

Best for: a gentler framing than Puff Count’s daily-limit approach, and a lower iOS minimum (14.2) than any other app here. Worth knowing: it’s English-only, there’s no Apple Watch app, and its listing mentions a subscription without naming a tier.

4. Puffless — gradual reduction, no subscription mentioned

Puffless, by Andrei Mikheev, keeps its feature list short: a personal quit plan, puff tracking, daily gradual limit reduction, detailed statistics and an “adaptive pace.” Its listing states its philosophy directly: “Abruptly quitting a bad habit almost always leads to a relapse,” so Puffless “uses a gradual quitting method” instead — close to how Puff Count’s own daily limits adapt.

Best for: one of two alternatives here (with Escape the Vape) whose listing doesn’t mention a subscription or premium tier at all. Worth knowing: its last update was 6 January 2026, the oldest of the eight apps compared, and its 153 US ratings are the smallest rating record among the six alternatives that aren’t ours.

5. Puff Counter — our own app, tapering with a weekly plan

Puff Counter is ours, and it’s the only alternative here besides Quit Vaping with an Apple Watch app. Instead of Puff Count’s daily limit and Mg-strength setting, Puff Counter’s listing describes “a plan that adapts to you”: your weekly limit recalculates from what you actually smoked or vaped, so a hard week changes next week’s number instead of leaving you behind a target you set once. Its listing also names an urge-surfing tool with guided breathing, streaks, challenges, an on-track score, a money-saved calculator and home and lock-screen widgets. It runs in 11 languages, nearly three times Puff Count’s 4.

Full disclosure: we make Puff Counter, so judge for yourself — it’s free to download on the App Store, and the full app is unlocked with Puff Counter Premium (a monthly subscription with a 7-day free trial, or a one-time lifetime purchase).

Best for: a weekly plan that adapts from your real numbers, plus an Apple Watch app. Worth knowing: its US rating is 5.0 from 3 ratings, too few to mean much on its own.

Two apps that count vape-free days instead

Puff Count’s listing is built around puffs: a count, a daily limit, an Mg strength. The next two alternatives drop that unit entirely and count the days since your last vape instead — a different way of answering the same question.

6. Escape the Vape — a vape-free streak and a community

Escape the Vape, by Woke Enterprises LLC, counts “how many days your lungs have been vape-free and how much money you’ve saved,” per its listing, with a home screen widget, milestones and badges, a health timeline showing what changes as you stay off the vape, guided breathing for cravings, and a community for sharing wins and asking for tips. Its listing calls itself “built only for quitting vaping, not adapted from a smoking app.”

Best for: a simple vape-free counter plus a community, with no subscription mentioned in its listing. Worth knowing: it tracks days rather than puffs, so it won’t tell you how much you used before you stopped; it’s English-only and has no Apple Watch app.

7. Exhale - Quit Vaping Now — daily accountability, subscription required

Exhale, by Felipe Miranda Policarpo de Assis, tracks “smoke-free days and milestones” rather than puffs, per its listing, with daily check-ins and streaks, progress and relapse tracking, a health recovery timeline, a savings tracker, and craving and panic support. Unlike most apps here, its listing says a subscription “is required to unlock full access to all features, programs, and personalized insights” — not an optional extra.

Best for: structured daily accountability toward a vape-free streak. Worth knowing: its listing requires iOS 17.6, the newest minimum of any app compared here, and there’s no Apple Watch app.

Also considered

  • Smoke Free, a strong rating record on this site’s other app comparisons, isn’t here because its listing never mentions vaping at all.
  • I Am Sober (4.9 from 188,191 US ratings) is a general sobriety counter; its listing doesn’t mention vaping, smoking or puffs.
  • Kwit needs iOS 18.1 or later and pairs cognitive behavioural therapy with gamification; see our Kwit alternatives for more apps like it.

How to choose

If vape-specific tracking with a friend along is what you want, Quit Vaping has the biggest rating record of the seven. If you want Puff Count’s puff-counting idea with a gentler framing, VapeFree or Puffless. If a subscription-free listing matters, Puffless and Escape the Vape are the two that name none. If you’d rather count vape-free days and savings instead of puffs, Escape the Vape or Exhale.

And if the honest issue is that Puff Count’s daily limit doesn’t fit how you actually vape, Puff Counter is free to download. A 2019 Cochrane review (Lindson and colleagues) found that cutting down before quitting and stopping abruptly lead to similar quit rates, so cutting down first is a legitimate route. Count for three days before you decide anything else, and let the number tell you what to do next. Frequently asked questions

Is there a free alternative to Puff Count?

Several. Puffless and Escape the Vape are both free to download, and neither app's listing mentions a subscription or premium tier at all. Puff Counter (our app, disclosed above) is also free to download, and the full app is unlocked with Puff Counter Premium (a monthly subscription with a 7-day free trial, or a one-time lifetime purchase) — closer to Puff Count's own 'Puff Count Unlimited' model than a fully free app.

Does Puff Count work on Apple Watch?

No. Puff Count's App Store listing names no Apple Watch app. Two of the seven alternatives compared here do list one: Quit Vaping and Puff Counter, our own app, disclosed above.

Is Puff Counter the same app as Puff Count?

No, they're different apps from different developers. Puff Count ('Puff Count: Quit Vaping Now') is made by Rodger Studio (Apps); Puff Counter is ours, and its US App Store name is 'Quit Smoking & Vaping Counter,' not 'Puff Count.' A third app, 'Puff Count:Quit Vaping Tracker,' from yet another developer, adds to the confusion, and a fourth, 'Puff Counter - Stop Vaping' on Google Play, is a different developer's Android app.

Which Puff Count alternative lets me taper instead of quitting at once?

Three listings frame themselves around gradual reduction rather than a fixed quit date: Puff Counter (ours) recalculates a weekly limit from your real numbers, VapeFree's listing offers 'a gentle method' to get smoke-free 'slowly, at your own pace,' and Puffless's listing says it 'uses a gradual quitting method' because abrupt quitting 'almost always leads to a relapse.'
