Smoke Free App Alternatives for iPhone (2026)
Seven Smoke Free app alternatives for iPhone compared on App Store data: ratings, quit date or taper, vaping support and Apple Watch. Checked 3 Oct 2026.
Quick answer
QuitNow has the biggest rating record among the seven alternatives, with an ex-smokers' chat and a built-in course. Kwit is next if you also vape. Puff Counter, our own app (disclosed below), ranks third and is built for tapering puff by puff rather than counting days since a quit date.
Smoke Free is one of the most recommended quit-smoking apps there is, and its listing explains why: built around a quit date, with counters for how long you’ve been quit, money saved and cigarettes not smoked, over 40 evidence-based techniques, and a craving log with tips, a map, notes and a graph. The core app is free and ad-free. Pro adds daily Missions and an AI Quit Coach, and a separate paid service, Blitz your Quit, adds an expert advisor on top.
Where it may not fit: its listing is written entirely around cigarettes and a quit date, with no mention of vaping, and it assumes you’ve already decided to stop rather than helping you cut down first. A 2019 Cochrane review (Lindson and colleagues) found that cutting down before quitting and stopping abruptly lead to similar quit rates, so if tapering is your plan, a quit-date app works against the grain rather than with it.
Everything below is App Store data as of 3 October 2026 (US storefront): ratings, counts, developers, update dates, languages and paid tiers all come from each app’s own listing.
Two different apps are called “Smoke Free”
Searching for Smoke Free turns up two unrelated apps, and it’s easy to install the wrong one. Smoke Free - Quit Smoking Now by 23 Ltd is the one described above and the one most lists mean: 4.8 from 57,272 US ratings, with Pro Missions and an AI Quit Coach. Quit Smoking ~ Smoke Free by Dennis Ebbinghaus is a separate app, from a different developer: 4.7 from 11,434 US ratings, with its own daily Tasks, a Knowledge section, a Top 10 Tips list from other ex-smokers, and 100 Reasons to use when a craving hits. Neither listing mentions vaping.

How we picked
We started from the apps that surface for “smoke free app alternative” searches, plus apps that cover the two things Smoke Free’s listing doesn’t: vaping, and a way to cut down before a quit date. Puff Counter is ours, and we’ve put it third rather than first.
Ratings are a rough signal, not proof an app works: a few hundred ratings and a few thousand aren’t the same evidence. Puff Counter’s own US figure, 5.0 from 3 ratings, is too small to mean much alone; across all countries it is 4.9 from 24. Weigh the rating alongside the feature list, not instead of it.
| App | Developer | Last updated | Paid tier (per listing) |

| Puff Counter | Ridvan Uyan (us) | 2 Oct 2026 | Puff Counter Plus subscription |
| quitSTART | ICF International, Inc. | 13 Aug 2026 | Not mentioned |

1. QuitNow: the biggest rating record of the seven
QuitNow offers an ex-smokers’ chat, a monthly live session with a smoking-cessation expert, a built-in step-by-step course, and 80 milestones for cigarettes avoided, days smoke-free and money saved. QuitNow AI answers questions from the app’s course and WHO data, and an Apple Watch app and widgets keep your stats on your wrist. It runs in 28 languages and holds 4.7 from 13,597 US ratings, the biggest rating record among the seven alternatives here.
Best for: its chat, monthly live expert sessions and a built-in course. Worth knowing: its counters start from your last cigarette, so it doesn’t plan a reduction the way a taper app does.
2. Kwit: vaping support alongside smoking
Kwit pairs cognitive behavioural techniques with gamification: guided breathing, mini-games and motivation cards for craving moments, a 9-day preparation programme, and community groups. What sets it apart here is its nicotine replacement tracker, which its listing says covers patches, gum, vaping devices and e-cigarettes. It runs in 11 languages and holds 4.7 from 2,821 US ratings.
Best for: anyone cutting down from vaping as well as, or instead of, cigarettes. Worth knowing: there’s no Apple Watch app, and the deeper library of content and coaching sits behind Kwit’s premium tier. For more options like it, see our Kwit alternatives.
3. Puff Counter: a taper plan instead of a quit date
Puff Counter starts where the rest of this list doesn’t: not on a quit date, but on an ordinary day when you’re still smoking or vaping. You count every puff or cigarette with one tap, from the app, a home or lock-screen widget, or an Apple Watch, and your weekly taper plan recalculates from those real numbers each week, so a bad week makes the next step realistic rather than leaving you behind a target you only guessed at. An urge-surfing tool with guided breathing and money saved from your own prices round it out.
It runs in 11 languages, free to download; the full app is unlocked with Puff Counter Premium, a monthly subscription with a 7-day free trial or a one-time lifetime purchase. For apps built specifically around a puff count, see our Puff Count alternatives. US App Store: 5.0 from 3 ratings; across all countries, 4.9 from 24.
Full disclosure: we make Puff Counter, so judge for yourself — it’s free on the App Store, and how its weekly taper works is on the landing page.
4. quitSTART: free, with no premium tier at all
quitSTART is a product of Smokefree.gov, created by the Tobacco Control Research Branch at the National Cancer Institute in collaboration with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. It turns your smoking history into tailored tips, challenges and badges for milestones, with a Quit Kit for what helps and a way back on track if you slip. Its listing names no subscription or premium tier. It’s English-only, and holds 4.6 from 2,424 US ratings.
Best for: a fully free app with nothing to upgrade to, unlike Smoke Free’s Pro tier and paid Blitz your Quit service. Worth knowing: English-only, and it tracks smoke-free days rather than counting down puffs or cigarettes beforehand.
5. QuitSure: a programme you can start before you quit
QuitSure replaces logging with a programme: a 6-day or 6-week course of daily video, audio and reading sessions built on cognitive behavioural and REBT therapy, plus a personal coach and a quit tracker. Its listing says you don’t have to stop today — you can keep smoking throughout and quit only at the end. Its full name, “QuitSure Quit Smoking & Vaping,” reflects a listing for anyone who smokes or vapes. It runs in 7 languages and holds 4.8 from 1,565 US ratings.
Best for: a structured day-by-day course rather than logging, with no pressure to set a quit date up front. Worth knowing: a paid subscription is required after a 3-day free trial, and there’s no Apple Watch app.
6. EasyQuit: a dedicated mode for cutting down slowly
EasyQuit tracks the usual health and money statistics, but its listing highlights a “Stop Smoking Slowly Mode” that builds a customised plan for reducing gradually. A memory game helps past a craving, and two widgets keep your smoke-free time and savings visible. It runs in 10 languages and holds 4.7 from 1,149 US ratings.
Best for: cutting down first, with a mode built specifically for a slow reduction rather than a hard stop. Worth knowing: its trigger statistics, relapse assistant and diary are marked as Pro-version features in its own listing, and there’s no Apple Watch app.
7. Quitzilla: for tracking more than just cigarettes
Quitzilla isn’t written for smoking specifically — its listing describes tracking “all of your bad habits or addictions” side by side, each with its own abstinence timer and money-saved reward. If nicotine is one of several things you’re quitting at once, having them on one screen is the appeal. It’s the most translated app here, with 29 languages, and holds 4.8 from 1,510 US ratings.
Best for: tracking more than one habit alongside smoking, in more languages than any other app here. Worth knowing: it counts abstinence days and money rather than puffs or cigarettes, and its listing has no craving-specific tools or quit programme.
Also considered
- My QuitBuddy, from the Department of Health, Australian Capital Territory, is free with no premium tier, and its listing covers smoking and vaping. English-only, 4.8 from 496 US ratings.
- Quit Smoking ~ Smoke Free, covered above, is a legitimate alternative if you want daily Tasks and a Knowledge section rather than Missions and an AI coach.
Pick by what Smoke Free doesn’t do for you
| If you… | Try | Why |
|---|---|---|
| are still smoking and want to cut down first | Puff Counter, EasyQuit or QuitSure | Weekly taper from your log; Slow Mode plan; keep smoking throughout the programme |
| also vape | Kwit, QuitSure or Puff Counter | Vaping tracker; name covers vaping; counts puffs, not just cigarettes |
| want a fully free app with no premium tier | quitSTART | From the National Cancer Institute; no subscription in its listing |
| want more languages | QuitNow (28) or Quitzilla (29) | The most languages listed on the App Store here |

| want a course, not a tracker | QuitSure or QuitNow | 6-day/6-week programme; built-in step-by-step course |
| want to track more than one habit | Quitzilla | Built to track “all of your bad habits or addictions” together |
How to choose
The biggest rating record and a built-in course: QuitNow. Also vaping: Kwit, QuitSure or Puff Counter, depending on whether you want a tracker, a programme or a puff count. Free with nothing to upgrade to: quitSTART. Text-message support is one of the better-studied forms of digital quit help, according to a 2019 Cochrane review on smoking. A course rather than a tracker: QuitSure. Several habits at once: Quitzilla.
None of this makes Smoke Free a bad app. It simply isn’t built for vaping, and it assumes you’ve already set the date rather than helping you get there.
And if the honest problem is that you don’t know how much you actually smoke or vape, Puff Counter is free to start with. Count for three days before you change anything, and let the taper follow the real number. Frequently asked questions
What is the best alternative to Smoke Free?
It depends on what you need. QuitNow is the best all-round pick on this list, with the biggest rating record among the seven alternatives (13,597 US ratings), an ex-smokers' chat, monthly live expert sessions and a built-in course. If you also vape, Kwit's listing covers vaping as well as smoking. If you're still smoking and want to cut down before you pick a quit date, Puff Counter (our app, disclosed below), EasyQuit or QuitSure are built for that instead.
Is there a free alternative to Smoke Free Pro?
Yes. quitSTART, from Smokefree.gov and the US National Cancer Institute, is free with no premium tier at all, unlike Smoke Free's Pro subscription or its separate paid Blitz your Quit service. Most other apps on this list are free to download and keep extra features behind a paid tier, the same model Smoke Free itself uses.
Which alternative works if I'm not ready to set a quit date?
Three apps here let you keep smoking while you prepare. Puff Counter builds a weekly taper from the puffs or cigarettes you actually log. EasyQuit's listing describes a 'Stop Smoking Slowly Mode' with a customised quitting plan. QuitSure's programme explicitly lets you keep smoking until your quit day arrives at the end of its 6-day or 6-week course.
Are there two apps called Smoke Free?
Yes, and it's an easy mix-up. 'Smoke Free - Quit Smoking Now' by 23 Ltd is the one most lists mean: 4.8 from 57,272 US ratings, built around a quit date, with Missions and an AI Quit Coach in its paid Pro tier. 'Quit Smoking ~ Smoke Free' by Dennis Ebbinghaus is a separate app from a different developer: 4.7 from 11,434 US ratings, with its own daily Tasks and a Top 10 Tips list from other ex-smokers.
