What actually reaches you

Delivered dose is the number that governs dependence, and it is much harder to pin down.

For cigarettes it is reasonably well characterised: roughly 1 to 2 mg absorbed per cigarette, arriving in the brain within about ten to twenty seconds of inhaling. That speed is what makes cigarettes such efficient dependence engines — the reward follows the action almost instantly.

For vapes the honest answer is that it depends. The same device delivers wildly different amounts depending on the coil, the power, the length of the draw, whether you take mouth-to-lung or direct-lung puffs, and how deeply you inhale. Nicotine salts, which are the standard in high-strength pods and disposables, are formulated so that high concentrations go down smoothly, which removes the natural brake that throat harshness used to provide.

For pouches, some of the nicotine stays in the pouch when you discard it, and how much depends on how long you keep it in and where you place it.

So content is knowable and delivery is not. That gap is exactly where the marketing lives.

Why “one pod equals a pack” is not a measurement

You will see equivalence claims everywhere: one pod is a pack, one disposable is two packs, this strength matches your usual brand.

Treat them as manufacturer claims, because that is what they are. They are built from content arithmetic — total mg in the product against estimated mg delivered by a pack — and content arithmetic ignores everything that determines your actual intake. A person who empties a 600-puff disposable in a day and a person who makes the same device last a week have taken the same product and very different doses.

There is one thing the equivalence claims are useful for. If your device holds more nicotine than a pack of cigarettes and you finish it in a day, you are not stepping down from smoking. You are stepping sideways at best.

Does higher mg/ml mean you take in more nicotine?

Not necessarily, and this catches people out in both directions.

People who drop from 20 mg/ml to 10 mg/ml very often start vaping roughly twice as much, because the body is defending a nicotine level it is used to. Total intake barely moves. It is the same compensatory behaviour that made light cigarettes useless: change the concentration and the behaviour adapts to restore the dose.

The reverse also happens. People who move up in strength to “cut down” sometimes do genuinely take fewer puffs — and then never get past that plateau, because the ritual is untouched.
